The most difficult part of being a solitary vampyre, is the need for discretion. How does a vampyre cope when you are the only one of your kind around? What if you can’t find a donor, or feeding creates problems with your family or spouse? Worse, what if you’re a PAGAN Vampyre, living in fundamental Christian territory?
When I decided to tackle this topic, I knew there were NO easy answers. I spent hours rummaging through old posts and threads looking for ways to simplify the life of vamps living in difficult circumstances. What I came up with is basically a list of ‘helpful hints’ and tips. There are no real solutions, but I do hope the makeshift advice I’ve prepared will help make the burden of being a solitary vampyre a little lighter…
To feed or not to feed, that is the question…
… and if you happen to live in a Fundamental Christian household, blood feeding can be the hardest thing in the world to get away with doing on a regular enough basis to supply your physical needs. Its not like you can walk up to your priest or deacon and ask for help finding a blood donor… at least, not when you want to DRINK the blood! The safest solution here is the old vampyre fall-back: Bloody, rare steaks.
Having spent a good part of my working life as a career waitress, I can tell you that there is NOTHING odd about someone with a taste for rare steak. It’s the second or third (depending on where you live) most popular way of eating steak, right behind medium, and medium-rare. For many years, I’ve ordered my steaks Blue-Rare. Once in a while someone would say “ewwwww” but it’s generally not considered to be distasteful to order it in polite company. THIS is your lifesaver! If you are out there alone, living where being a vampyre is not acceptable, rare steak WILL keep you fed and healthy, and there is little chance anyone will try and lock you up for liking it. I try and have one every 7 to 10 days when I am donor-less (which is often).
Not everyone can afford steak. Even if you CAN afford to eat steak every night, it doesn’t take very long to get tired of a steady diet of rare meat of ANY kind! This brings me to feeding alternatives.
Every vampyre site has a few listed. Most have not been extensively tested for effectiveness; and subtlety must also be considered. (Blendering up some raw meat with water and drinking it in front of your evangelical Christian mate is going to raise some eyebrows, if you’re trying to ‘stay in the coffin’, so to speak…)
Following are few of the methods I’ve found to be discreet and helpful in limiting the number of vamp outs you have to deal with when unable to feed ‘normally’ (whatever normal is).
Consumable alternatives that some vamps find helpful:
- Chocolate Milk
- Yogurt (or acidophilus supplements)
- Red Wine
- Semen (…if you are sexually active… great for convincing hubby to be more tolerant of vampyrism *winks*)
- Fresh Pineapple
- Suck on clean pennies
- Blood Supplements (ie: hemo-plex, iron supplements, etc)

One great way to cover up the fact that most vampyres are obsessed about their eating habits and getting the nutrients needed to prevent “vamp outs” is to take up an interest in becoming a nutrition / health fanatic. I find that in the current climate of health awareness, very few people bat too much of an eye if you become obsessed with being healthy. It’s a great way to keep the in-laws from grilling you about “all those supplements” or coming to the conclusion that you are a hypochondriac. On the other hand, having the in-laws think you’re a hypochondriac MIGHT be preferable to having them know you are a vampyre!
By FAR one of the most prevalent substitutes for blood when feeding is impossible. I have never found, personally, that psi feeding will replace a blood feeding. Mostly I use Psi feeding to put off a badly needed feeding, but a LOT of vampyres find it effective, so I am including it here with some methods to achieve the effect.
It seems like everyone has his or her own favorite method for Psi (psionic) feeding. The following is taken from a post I made on Smoke and Mirrors message board in the Psionics Forum:
The Tentacle Method
I first recommend “Grounding and Centering” (if you are into meditation, and all vamps SHOULD be).
The Tentacle Method (best for one-on-one drawing), works by visualizing your receiving hand and arm (the opposite one to what you write with) as a morphing into a tentacle. Visualize the tentacle growing impossibly long and reaching invisibly toward your ‘donor’. Picture the tentacle drawing energy from your donor and see it rushing lovely fluid veins of light down the tentacle into your body, nourishing you. When you feel warm and strong, or at the first sign of discomfort from your donor, stop drawing the energy. Picture your tentacle getting dark from the tip toward you. See your tentacle retract and morph back into your arm and hand again.
The “Open Pore” Method
The better method to use in a crowd, like my favorite WWE wrestling events, is the open pore method. It also works best during sex, if you are one of those vampyres who love sexual energy feeding. Picture the pores of your skin opening up and receiving the waves of energy that are all around you. Picture yourself drawing the energy in, until you can ‘see’ all the energy in the room swirling into a vortex around you and streaming warmly into you through every pore. I find this one is mostly self-limiting. I’ve never overcharged to my detriment and I can always find a use for excess energy, so I just draw it in until I forget to keep drawing. (It’s easy to forget at an event of some kind.) You might want to visualize the whole process reversing if you feel like you need to close the feeding session.
Those are the visuals I use. I found with practice they both give really good control. I’m sure there must be dozens of other good ways too.
I preach it and preach it and preach it, and have for years, and will likely continue to do so until I’m dead. All Vampyres should learn to meditate! If you can’t seem to get the hang of meditating then I recommend starting with visualizations or guided meditations. (Most of my collection has come from e-groups and message boards over the years and are often sent as Anonymous to my email. I have provided the authors when they are known. If you need more visualizations, any search engine can find you hundreds if you search under “Meditations”.)
Below is one of my favorite meditations / visualizations. I find it most helpful for vampyres:
The Crystal Cave Meditation
This is a very beautiful visualization/meditation. Free your mind!
Sit or lie comfortably. Music or tapes of nature sounds are immensely helpful in this one. Close your eyes. Slow your breathing.
Imagine yourself walking down a woodland path. There are deer, squirrels, rabbits, and other wildlife scampering in the underbrush. You can hear birds singing. As you walk, the path becomes progressively steeper. You climb, but the uphill walk does not tire you. As you come to the crest of the hill, you see the opening to a cave in the side of a mountain, only a few feet away. Your totem animal, or an animal you identify with, should be waiting there.
Walk into the cave. At first, the walls will be black or grey. Then you see a sparkle, and notice the walls are covered with garnets, giving off a scarlet glow. Walk through the hall of garnets, absorbing their light. Slowly, the garnets will give way to carnelian, glowing softly orange. Walk through the carnelians, absorbing their light. Slowly, the carnelian gives way to topaz, shining with a sunshiny yellow.
Walk through the topaz, absorbing its light. The topaz will give way to emerald. Walk through the emerald, absorbing its light. The emeralds will give way to turquoise. Walk through the turquoise, absorbing its light. The turquoise gives way to walls of sapphires. Walk through the sapphires, absorbing their light. The sapphires will finally give way to amethyst. Walk through the amethyst, absorbing its light.
When you have come through the amethyst hall, you should be in the place you want to be. Let your mind go, it will take you where you need to go.
If you happen to be a Magick user and into spell work, there are several options open to you when it comes to drawing energy. Below is one I found in my collections, and it could be modified to suit your needs. If you need more spells I recommend you visit Yahoo! Groups and do a search for “Spell” or BOS (Book of Shadows) groups. There are far too many to list here.

A Spell to Gain Energy
A bright red or orange candle; some spicy incense; a glass of clear, pure, cold water; and a bowl of sea salt.
If it is sunny out you may want to start the spell by going outside for a few minutes and breathing in some fresh air. Sit in front of the candle and say:
“Give me energy to happily complete the task I have been given to do. I will feel better for having done it. The completion of the task will be my reward.”
Sprinkle the sea salt around the candle and say,
“Give me strength, O sacred Earth.”
Pass your hand near the candle and say,
“Give me strength, O sacred Fire.”
Pass your hand through the smoke of the incense and say,
“Give me strength, O sacred Air.”
Drink the water down and say,
“Give me strength, O sacred water.”
Now immediately get up and go do your task.
Nocturnal vs. Diurnal Lifestyles
Many, many vampyres tend to be drawn to a nocturnal existence. Some believe it’s because we often do not interact well with the sun. Some believe it’s because vampyres are predatory in nature and night is the time to ‘hunt’. Whatever the reason, I know all too well that it can create havoc if you have a family and you are required to be awake and functioning during the day. If at all possible, I recommend that nocturnally inclined vampyres find a job working nights.
If that is NOT possible, I recommend Melatonin. Melatonin is a widely available supplement used by body builders and people who suffer from jet lag. It is inexpensive, easy to find and comes in very low dosages. Check with your physician FIRST, as you would when trying out any new supplement. Melatonin works by resetting your Circadian Rhythms. It should never be taken for more than 9 weeks at a time. I find one capsule when I am having trouble with my sleep patterns is often enough. I have never had to take it more than 3 nights in a row, but that’s me. Be sure to follow the directions from your doctor or at least the label on the bottle.
Being Solitary is hard, but it’s not impossible. Most solitary vampyres revolve their life around something other than their vampyrism. Home, Family, Garden… Vampyrism in that case becomes a matter of simply dealing with the physical symptoms in the simplest and least noticeable way possible.
The biggest drawback is likely to be the loneliness of not being around others like yourself, which brings us to my next article….
