The Awakening (A Poem)

By Shiki Miyagi

He sat there, lost and forlorn,
The poor man, staring at his fate
Rippling in the water below,
All his memories flashing away.

He recalls memories of his past,
From most happy to most dreadful,
And watches silently at
All his memories flashing away.

He knows now what he must do,
And regrets now what he can not,
But accepts what he can’t change,
As all his memories flash away.

He dreads the word that describes
The way he must live now,
A vampire, nothing less makes
All his memories flash away.

He can not return to his old life,
His new one had taken over,
After the awakening he saw
All his memories flash away.

But fear he not for things bring hope,
The joy, the laughter of the scare
He can put into people is great,
As new thoughts come to mind.

He triumphs a small reveille
At the difference he is at,
And puts aside the things he lost,
For new thoughts have come to mind.

He sits upon the wall with his head held high,
Knowing that he is different,
And rejoicing in small things
As new thoughts come to mind.

He watches the water ripple with hope,
As the heavens open and spill their tears,
He sits high in his lofty state,
With new thoughts in his mind.

His life had changed but not that bad,
For now he sits, a transformed man,
A vampire now, part from the humans,
And new thoughts come to mind.

But now the pain, it comes too soon,
This burning desire he knows not,
The need; the want for something more,
The desire, the need, burning inside him.

He is thirsty for something new,
A craving he never felt before,
Burning at his mouth, the pain,
The desire, the need, burning inside him.

He knows once more what he must do,
And he fears this thing that haunts him so,
The need to feed is above all else,
The desire, the need, burning inside him.

He leaves his perch in search for a cure,
But knows not what he may do,
So satisfy this craving inside,
This desire, this need, burning inside.

He knows blood is the only cure,
The sound of it makes him calm,
But the craving is relentless,
The desire, the need, burning inside.

So now he’s off to quench this thirst,
Though not sure how he still will try,
He must be strong, he must hold up,
He must quench this raging thirst.

He heads off into the dark pathway,
In search of what he wants most,
He must succeed, he is determined,
To quench this raging thirst.

No amount of water can cure it,
No drink for a mortal man,
Only the blood, that salty blood
Can quench this raging thirst.

He walks through town with a hunters face,
Searching for the cure to his burning need,
The blood he craves more than all else,
This blood can quench this raging thirst.

At last he spots his closest friend,
And tells what happened in perfect sense,
He tells of the burning desire, and how
Only blood can quench this raging thirst.

For long they sit with tear-filled eyes,
Nothing can break this special bond,
For there they sit, in a tight embrace,
Knowing blood can quench this raging thirst.

They part for a moment then come together,
He sinks his teeth deep into her neck, and
The salty warm taste floods his mouth,
Because blood had cured his raging thirst.
