Remember this: Those you take from are people, men and women, human beings. And so are you, for that matter, despite whatever else you would like to think, or have been told. You are not better than they are, just different. “Humans” are not to be viewed as cattle or to be ruled over by those who are vampires.

Please, if you have no ongoing need to drink blood, Sanguinarius requests that you refrain from doing so. It is a very risky, if not downright dangerous, thing to do, especially in these times. It’s not something you should do casually, or to impress or shock your friends or family, or to be different.

Dealing with the Hunger

Someone asked me, “Any suggestions to help deal with hunger pangs?”

“Keep something in your stomach always,” I replied. “Coffee…”

“Anything specific,” they asked, “or just anything in your stomach? Or did I ask you already?”

I said, “If / when I get hungry it’s terrible, so I try to keep something in my stomach at all times.”

“I figured that…didn’t know if some things helped more than others.”

“I try to keep caffeine… — if I drink water, it’s not hardly ever just water, but water with something: coffee, OJ, soda…whatever.”

“So liquids, then? Not always solids?” smirk

“A combo,” I said, “so that I don’t feel the hunger pangs, because they are terrible…” I added, “Food, liquids…then the Need is not so bad.”

“Hmmm, you ought to put that on your tips page.” 🙂

Blood Substitutes

The need for blood can also be satisfied in ways other than intimate contact with a willing human donor. Try drinking red Gatorade mixed with a little bit of orange juice and beef broth and liquid multivitamins. (Try it, it tastes almost like blood and it’s VERY nutritious.)

I hate to say it, but if you cannot find fresh blood, you may just have to ride it out and bear it.

I know the blood from a rare/medium-rare steak is not the same as fresh, but it will keep you from going completely mad. A word of caution: Don’t cook hamburger or ground meat rare or less-cooked than a very good medium-rare. There’s the chance of it having E. coli, which is a surface bacteria, and might not get killed in a hamburger/ground meat if it’s not cooked fully. E. coli gets eliminated when cooked, so if it IS present on a steak or something of that nature, then it won’t be on the inside, — just the surface — and will be destroyed and safe to consume.

Yes, I know it’s not the same, as I said. But unless you can find a source or sources, then you may need to resort to that once or twice a week. It IS better than nothing.

Some alternatives might be satisfying due to their taste, composition, consistency or even color (which might be more psychologically satisfying, but whatever helps in any way, I say…). Some suggestions have been: Chocolate or chocolate syrup; tomato-based products such as ketchup (suggested by Shadow), hot sauce or V8 juice (don’t laugh); spicy foods such as Tabasco sauce (again, hot sauce) or hot peppers; beef broth or beef bouillon; half-set jello; green tea; a few spoonfuls of orange Tang powder (dry); pulpy orange juice; yoghurt; chicken or beef liver (cooked).

As always, you mileage may vary, as they say.  Try something and if it works, keep using it; if it doesn’t, try something else instead.  Stay tuned, as I will update this from time to time with more substitutes, as I learn of them.

Helping Blood Cravings

Hershey’s chocolate syrup helps the cravings for blood somewhat. Keep a can in your fridge and drink some when you feel the need. It should help some, even though there really is no good substitute for blood itself.

I have found a drink that actually really helps stop the craving for blood but not altogether; it at least takes some of the “pain” of it off. High Pulp Orange Juice: it’s thick, filling, easy to get, and everyone’s happy because you are drinking something “normal” and healthy. I figure it could probably help a lot of teens, like me, who live with their parents.

Try canned beef bouillon/broth. Not the cubes — the cubes are 90% salt. Don’t let anyone tell you there’s “no difference”; that only applies if you’re COOKING. 🙂 Warm it or drink it cold, doesn’t matter. Primary ingredient should be “beef broth” or something similar. If you’re low on funds, get one can to try.

Other, non-blood ideas: Keep something liquid in your stomach at all times — I personally recommend fruit juice and water (keeping yourself hydrated) and NOT a lot of caffeine products — caffeine is a diuretic (makes you pee more without replacing the liquid).

Make sure you’re getting your minimum vitamin requirements in each day. Keep yourself healthy. Add extra B-12 to your diet (get a “stress formula” or something) — DO NOT ADD A LOT OF IRON as Iron has been shown, in large enough quantities, to contribute to a few nasty, fast-growing cancers. We’ve got enough problems, we don’t need to add cancer to the list. 🙂

Truly there is nothing out there that can replace blood, anyone who tells you otherwise is lying. Here are some foods and such that have helped keep me sane. Smoothies are great! Especially coffee-flavored ones made with half-and-half or cream. Also instant mashed potatoes work pretty well. Make them with chicken, or preferably beef, broth instead of water. Sounds crazy but it works really well for me. ^_^

1. Steak
Another method of cooking that I regularly use. Heat an oven to 150°C (about 300°F) with a baking tray in it. When it is up to temp slap your steak (seasoned as you like) on the baking tray.

Cook for 2 min a side at most. Just enough to seal the outside and warm the inside to body temp. Cooking too long is a waste of blood, too long and you risk an upset stomach. Fresh is WAY better than frozen.

2. Blood sausage
Don’t know if you can get it in other countries, but here in England we have black pudding, a sausage made from pigs blood. It is sliced and fried for breakfast. Got more iron than chewing on nails, plus feeds us in ways we need to be fed. 😉

3. Oil of Clove
My old emergency remedy. Oil of clove can be bought from herbal remedy shops and some pharmacies (drug stores to you Americans). It is used as a dental anesthetic and rubbed on gums helps with wisdom teeth and the likes. Get a glass of ice cold water and put 2-3 drops of clove oil in it (a.k.a. a tincture). Drink slowly in sips and give the water time to swill around your mouth. By numbing the tongue you will reduce the thirst drastically. Oil comes in little bottles, so easy to keep in your backpack or handbag. Anyone asks, it’s for your tooth pain.

Necrobabe’s Extra Yummy, Extra Bloody Steak

This is how I cook my steak every time I cook it, and it rocks!!

The type of steak you use is important, and does make a difference. The best cuts for this are, in order:

Filet Mignon, Faux Fillet (I have only found this in Canada), Bone-in Rib Eye, Rib Eye, Chuck Eye, Porterhouse, T-Bone, and New York Strip. Minimum thickness on any steak is 1″. To cook anything thinner is in vain — trust me. 2″ thick is the maximum.

This next step is VERY IMPORTANT!!!, and is the main key to this entire recipe. Leave the steak out on the counter for a few hours…it must be room temperature all the way through. This is very safe, and it allows the center of the steak to be as warm as possible before cooking so that it reaches a safe temperature during it’s brief cooking time. If you are starting with a frozen steak, thaw it completely in the fridge only or you will experience blood loss. Do NOT season your steak yet!

[Sangi Note: This procedure is safe to do with cuts of meat such as steaks and similar, but if you plan on cooking hamburger, I strongly recommend that you do not let your hamburger meat sit out like that; and also, do be sure that you cook the hamburger meat thoroughly to eliminate any possible presence of E. coli. E. coli is a surface bacteria, and is destroyed upon contact with heat. This is why it is safe to cook slabs of meat rare, but risky to cook ground meat rare. The ground meat has lots of surface areas, both inside and out.]

When your steak is at room temperature turn your grill on high, or light the charcoal and let it get as hot as it can possibly get. If you are using charcoal, that will be after the coals have ash all over them and a red glow. Close the grill while it is warming to ensure that it is very, very hot! If you are cooking on a stove, a cast iron pan is best. Turn the burner on high, and make sure to turn the vent fan on because it will smoke!

When everything is hot and ready to go, I rub Worcestershire sauce on it and then sprinkle each side with Lawrey’s Seasoned Salt and black pepper. Any seasoning salt will do, though.

Place the steak on the grill or in the pan and let it cook until dark brown. This should be no more than 1.5 minutes, usually it is about 1 minute. Turn the steak over and cook for the same amount of time. Do NOT close the lid during cooking, do NOT poke the steak with a fork or anything. I flip the steak with a pair of tongs. When done, put the steak on your plate and let it rest for about 1-2 minutes before you eat. When you cut into it, it should be the juiciest, bloodiest steak possible. 🙂
