*sincere, non-assinine voice* I hate to burst your bubble..I really do. But people like us are the closest thing there is to what you commonly know of as vampires.
There are no superhuman immortals. There are no bloodthirsty undead. We are all there are. And in the past, we would have been persecuted not as vampires but as sorcerors, witches, or heretics.
1.) The undead vampires of folklore come from misinterpretation of natural decay processes combined with a fear of death and superstitions developed so that ignorant men could feel safe from the unknown.
2.) The belief in “the vampire” as you people know it today and believe to be so has evolved from THAT above.
3.) Within the last 30 years or so, people have begun to think of vampires as non-human, immortal, powerful super-predators of Mankind.
4.) This is mainly due to writers and others purveyors of fiction interpreting and extending the vampire legends and lore and keeping the genre fresh and interesting. (How many times can they all tell the same old tale and maintain people's interest?)
5.) In legend, vampirism was a curse. In popular perception today, it is all that humanity could aspire to; humanity perfected: no vulnerabilities, no attachments, no moral obligations, optimal health and well-being, no fear of death, no disease or dying, freedom, power, desirability, influence, capability…set up above “mere mortals” — better adapted, and therefore better able to survive and more capable of doing so than the weak, pathetic creatures they once were.
Give me a break. Even reading of this type of vampire has become unbearable to me! I can scarcely think of that kind of being as a “vampire”. *sigh* Whoever thinks of Dracula (NO NO NO!!!!!! — Not the Gary Oldman Dracula! That belongs with the new breed) anymore? Who thinks of Barnabas? Who thinks of …oh forget it…
This is turning into a rant…of frustration.
I know of “the vampire” before he supposedly had all these things and abilities and retractible fangs to boot! What a hoot. And even then, that vampire was not an accurate perception. Even that vampire is an extension of the folklore and early fiction!
It is all bullshit. All of it! Even the so-called vampire hunters or slayers. In history (history, not folklore, not fiction) — in history, a vampire hunter would not have “gone after” any of us; he would have dug up dead bodies and desecrated them. He would not have thought of us twice (granted, we keep our mouths shut, so as not to stir up undue trouble) as a “vampire”. It was the witch hunters that we had to look out for back then; not vampire hunters.
We are all there is. We are the closest thing to “the vampire” as it is in anything: folklore, fiction, modern perception…
And anyone who tells you there are vampires that are anything like those of Anne Rice, Vampire: The Masquerade, Innocent Blood, Forever Knight, Bram Stoker&'s Dracula, — even Dracula, by Bram Stoker, — and I do not know how many other modern tales — is lying to you.
To others who read this and would beg to differ with me: This all is just fact, and not even subject to dispute. We are all there is, and we are the closest thing to what people know of as “vampires” that exist.
I would say, “I'm sorry”, but it's not MY fault that things are the way they are.
Now you have a choice: —
1.) Continue looking,…and looking…and looking,…for the rest of your life, finding only those people who are very good and very convincing* to you that they are, or that they know, such creatures as modern myth specifies as “vampires” (who will most likely lie to you about other things, as well, and use you for their own selfish ego-gratification and to bolster their delusions of grandeur);
2.) Learn about people like us. Share the knowledge, and help educate and inform other people;
3.) Entirely discontinue your seeking knowledge of vampires, deciding that we are all just freaks and nuts. Maybe take up gardening? *grin*
The choice, as they say, is yours…
* Some are extraordinarily good at deceiving others. It took me 7+ years of knowing one of these people (alleging to be one of the immortal, superhuman vampire predators) before s/he messed up. Whether s/he is actually one of us, I do not know, but I know for a fact the person is a fraud and maintained the charade for nearly a decade where I am concerned; possibly longer to others?).
This is just one example of one person. I come across many poseurs of varying degrees ranging from retarded neanderthalic attempts to the degree that I mentioned above.
