About the Seti@home Project

Arecibo Satellite Dish
SETI is the Search for Extra Terrestrial Intelligence (you know, that huge satellite dish at the Arecibo Observatory?). The Seti@home project uses distributed computing to process the tons and tons of data they recieve with that huge satellite dish. What this means is that members download a small screensaver program (the BOINC client), which runs in the background or only as a screensaver (your choice), and uses your computer's spare, unused cycles to process work units which contain the raw data that SETI recieves from the Arecibo dish. This is not intrusive to your usual computer habits (surfing, emailing, playing games, word processing, building web pages, or whatever else people usually do on their computers).

BOINC

BOINC stands for Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing.

The BOINC program is a special kind of screensaver. Like other screensavers it starts up when you leave your computer unattended, and it shuts down as soon as you return to work. What it does in the interim is unique. While you are getting coffee, or having lunch or sleeping, your computer will be helping the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence by analyzing data specially captured by the world's largest radio telescope. You can also have it set to keep running even though you are working, if you want.

You can also choose other projects to work on. Use the idle time on your computer (Windows, Mac, or Linux) to cure diseases, study global warming, discover pulsars, and do many other types of scientific research.

Learn More about Seti@home. Also look at the BOINC FAQs page for more info about the BOINC Project.

Seti@Sanguinarius

Seti@Sanguinarius is Sanguinarius.org's efforts to assist in the search for extraterrestrial intelligence. (Dang it, I know my Mother Ship is out there SOMEWHERE -- help me find it! *grin*) Anybody is welcome to join in on this. All you need to do is download and install the Seti@home screensaver and then join the Seti@Sanguinarius Team.

I've been participating in this project for a while now, and have set up the Seti@Sanguinarius Team, which is a group effort to assist in the search. This group was created on 20 July, 2002. Anybody is welcome to join the Seti@Sanguinarius Team as long as you have a computer and an internet connection (which will enable you to participate in this project). If you're interested in learning more, then check out the Seti@home page.
